Mormon Battalion Historic Trails Awards Program

Anyone interested in the history of the Mormon Battalion – male, female, friends, families, large family organizations, youth trek groups, regional Scout encampments, and historical reenactors anywhere in the world – can earn new Mormon Battalion Historic Trails Awards.  These awards are not easily acquired, but require significant study and work.  The core Main Awards require hours of academic research, presentation, and an assortment of activities related to the original Mormon Battalion; and the supplemental Trail Segment Awards require days of major "field related" experiences similar to those of the original Mormon BattalionSee the following 42 page booklet, poster, and flyer for details:

Main Awards

The core Main Awards patches are extremely unique.  Most patches have no more than nine thread colors; but these patches have 18 thread colors, plus multi-directional stitching giving the impression of even more colors.  Their special three dimensional layout appears larger than it is, almost jumping off the fabric, with Ed Fraughton's Mormon Battalion SoldierTM in the foreground, and purple sagebrush, green mesquite, bleached grass, and brown soil/rock receding from his feet toward the purple and tan mountain skyline background of Warner Pass, California.  The pale blue desert sky with “ghost stitched” wispy clouds is overlaid with thin blue state lines and the seven Battalion routes in bold colors.

You can earn three versions of the core Main Awards:

  • brown edged patches for Scouts and Scouters,

  • green edged patches for non-Scouts, and

  • bronze pins and pendants for members of groups of 50 or more.
