Plea for Information Concerning All Women of the Battalion
U.S. Mormon Battalion Auxiliary
The State of Utah Sesquicentennial year just past has created a vast amount of interest
in the men of the Mormon Battalion who served in the Mexican War during 1846/47. We feel
that the women need to be recognized as well. They were a special group of people.
We have undertaken the project of placing a memorial plaque on each of the graves of
the women who went on the march with the Battalion and on all graves of the women who were
married to a Battalion soldier on July 20, 1846 who were left behind. This project is done
with the cooperation and in conjunction with families of these women.
There is a book "Women of the Battalion" written about those thirty-three
women who went on the march with the Battalion, and now we are in the pursuit of writing a
history on all the women of the Mormon Battalion who were left on the prairies of Iowa,
Nebraska, Missouri, Illinois etc. while their husbands went with the Mormon Battalion in
July of 1846.
It is our intent to include all such women in this book. If you have a history or story
on any of these women, it would be appreciated if you would send us a copy as we feel each
woman had an interesting story to tell. Including her biography would help in keeping her
memory alive and enhance the book. We would like to know where she was buried and the name
of the Immigration Company that brought her across the plains. Also, a picture, if
available, would add to the book.
If you don't have this information then possibly you could send us the name and address
of someone who you feel would have some information about her. We thank you for your time
and effort in sending any information that you might be willing to share.
Sincerely
Annie P Erekson, President
