The Mormon Battalion: A Selected Bibliographic List

by Glade Ian Nelson

The following information was published in the Genealogical Journal, volume 26, number 2 (1998), pages 59-79, an international publication of the Utah Genealogical Society.

The march of the Mormon Battalion was a truly epic event! Much has been written about it. The observance of the 1996-1998 sesquicentennial of the service of the original Battalion and the Mormon Volunteers in California saw an increase of interest in, and writings about, the Battalion. The men and women of the Battalion and their families were true heroes in the Western exploration and expansion of the United States.

Much remains to be written, particularly on the level of the individual Mormon Battalion participants and their families. Hopefully, this selected bibliographic list will assist those interested in finding out more of what their ancestors experienced, even if he or she did not leave a first-hand account.

This bibliographic list is divided into two major parts: "General reference background material," and "The history, march, and accomplishments of the Mormon Battalion." The first part lists major works in which the Battalion is presented in an over-all, greater scenario, but as only one facet of the larger panorama. It must be noted, however, that the treatment of the Battalion in these works ranges from a few paragraphs to substantial coverage. In a few cases the specific pages dealing with the Battalion are listed in brackets. All such references are listed together.

The second part is a list of works dealing with a specific aspect of the Battalion. In these works the major focus is on the Battalion, its history, the march, or its accomplishments. This second part is further divided into "Articles and Book Chapters," "Newspaper Articles," "Books and Pamphlets," "Theses and Dissertations," and "Government Records." The government records are particularly important because they are primary records created at the time of specific events dealing with the time period, or shortly thereafter. The Family History Library in Salt Lake City has microfilm copies of these records, and they can be requested by patrons of LDS Family History Centers.

As with any bibliography, the compiler's work is never finished! The author welcomes additions to, and comments regarding, this selected list. His e-mail address is
