Mormon Battalion Association Declaration of Intent

  1. The name of this organization shall be Mormon Battalion Association
  2. The headquarters of this corporation shall be located in the Salt Lake City, Utah, area.
  3. The PURPOSES of this organization shall be:
    1. To operate exclusively for historical, religious, charitable, literary, and educational purposes, as may hereafter be imposed by state and/or national law.
    2. To perpetuate and forever keep alive in the minds of all men the historic valor of the Mormon Battalion in its unsurpassed infantry march from Council Bluffs, Iowa Territory, to San Diego, California, more than 2000 miles, in 1846-7.
    3. To fulfill the prophecy of Brigham Young, in 1855, that men and nations should hold the men and women of the Mormon Battalion in honorable remembrance, and that their descendants should rise up and bless their noble ancestors who defended their country at that time.
    4. To see that the Mormon Battalion Trail is properly marked with such markers as statues, plaques, monuments, and highway signs where permitted.
    5. To take every opportunity, when authorized, to publicize the Battalion and its march by engaging in such activities as parades, exhibitions, dedications, religious meetings, memorializations, historical events, etc., to keep alive the memory of the Battalion.
    6. To see that sufficient funds are acquired to promote the activities and purposes of the Battalion by money-raising programs or through public donations, in keeping with the non-profit, tax-exempt status of this corporation.
    7. To maintain the charter status of the U.S. Mormon Battalion, chartered in 1954 in Utah, by the National Society of the sons of the Utah Pioneers. The two organizations divided in 1981 with the mutual understanding that the historic purposes of both will continue to be the same, and that members may continue to belong to both organizations.
    8. To recruit additional members by open invitation to anyone willing to meet the eligibility requirements of this organization and to actively pursue the fulfillment of its purposes--regardless of race, religion, or national origin.
