In reviewing the past year, it is going to be difficult (but not impossible!) to have as eventful a year as this one. h In May, Col. Madsen and Maj. Bascom met with a writer for the AP News who had written an article on "Militias," lumping the Battalion with those extremist groups. After we had enlightened him, the writer wrote, and the Salt Lake Tribune published, a laudatory 3 column resume of Battalion activities and purposes. The AP News Services sent it throughout the U.S., which resulted in our receiving many letters and telephone calls. This, in turn, brought us new members, grave memorialization requests, and more Battalion histories. 2: Col. Madsen, heading up the effort to refurbish the Battalion Monument on the State Capitol grounds, has been most successful. With some help from the Staff, he/we raised more than 250,000 dollars in professional labor and materials, plus several thousand ha cash donations. He deserves our commendation. The dedication date is not known yet. 3: We expect at least 10 more memorializations this next year! Company commanders, please push this. 4: In November, Major Bascom was one of the four presenters at the SUP History Symposium, "The Exodus from Nauvoo." A summary of his remarks, published in the Church News, Nov. 25, has brought the Battalion more exposure and more members. 5: Pres. Shirley Maynes and her husband, Gaylen, represent the Battalion on the committee planning the renovation of Pioneer Park--a major Centennial event. They are key people on that committee. 6: Louise Green, our Ladies Auxiliary vice-president, and one of the most effective women in Utah, is also President of the DUP, and is very influential on commissions and committees planning the Centennial agenda and maintaining Pioneer Museum. We are making ourselves noticed in several ways!
