The Tempe, AZ., Commemoration

In early January, Col. Madsen and his wife were present at the Sesquicentennial celebration of the Mormon Battalion march at the Tempe, AZ., stake. Under the guidance of their leaders, the YOUTH were encouraged to remember their Battalion ancestors. After readings and songs of the Battalion, Col. Madsen read the roll of the Battalion. As each name of a Battalion member was read, the descendants of that man or woman rose and told or read from his/her journal or history some significant comment. Capt. Lloyd Smith, commander of the Mesa Company, was amazed at the enthusiasm of the youth in their participation. When Col. Madsen, representing the original Battalion, passed the Battalion flag to a representative of the youth, with the charge to accept the privileges and responsibilities of their ancestors, it was an electrifying moment, felt by all present. It is sincerely hoped that Mesa Company will prosper with the impetus given it by this event. An additional thrill was the presenting of refreshments by a Pima Indian family in tribal dress-watermelon, jerky, and parched corn, typical of that given the Battalion-also given in exchange for buttons, as was done by the original Battalion. Displays by Mormon Battalion families in the Cultural Hall were an added attraction. Col. Madsen was impressed and thrilled by the youth of the Church wanting to know and carry on their heritage. This was a great moment in modern Battalion history!
