On 18 July, a program was held in Pioneer Park, conducted by Ltc. Gaylen Maynes who represented the Pioneer Park\Fort Restoration Committee, for the purpose of dedicating the flag pole, which represents the first phase of reconstitution of the Old Fort. As part of the Sesquicentennial events, it was attended by Mayor Deedee Corradini who congratulated the Committee for what they have done thus far in bringing the Park back into the use of the general populace. Also on the program was Randal Dixon, a historian, and Ronald Madsen, representing Sen. Orin Hatch, who has proposed a bill sustaining the honoring of the U.S. Flag.
Pres. Shirley Maynes, Chairwoman of the Committee, was the main speaker. Ltc. George Bascom led the congregation in singing, "God Bless America," and the children from the Northwest Multipurpose Day Care Center sang "Utah, we love thee" as the closing number. A contingent of the U.S. Mormon Battalion, under the command of Capt. Sheldon Teeples, performed the first flag ceremony for this new flagpole. Members of the Fort Restoration Committee were pleased with the results and thanked the Battalion for their participation. We are proud that Gaylen and Shirley Maynes represent the Battalion on this historic committee.
