Recently your Editor had the opportunity to listen to Hyrum Smith, the founder of Franklin Quest. This is a man who has
become famous for both his business successes and his willingness to share his "secrets of success" with others. Here are seven basic points which he gave a SUP group:
First: Have a product that works. For us, that would be the accomplishments of the original Battalion. Second: Surround yourself with a cadre of "good people"--people who are respected by others, and who feel responsible for the success of the undertaking. This is "most critical" says Smith. Third: "Have a passion for what you do." We are motivated by one of three things: fear, duty, love. Likening these to the three kingdoms (telestial, terrestrial, celestial), he places Love at the celestial level. Fourth: "Have a sense of urgency." How fast you respond to a NEED will determine your degree of success.
Fifth: Financial success must be the by-product of some other success. Making money must not be the first consideration; rather, making money for what worthy PURPOSE? Sixth: Have faith in yourself. Believe in your work--that it is worth the effort, and will work. Seventh: (the most important) Have faith in God. Both you and your employees should share a faith in God. Can we apply these principles to ourselves and the Mormon Battalion?
